  • Adults are gray above, white below, with dark gray wings and tail, a dark gray mask, and a dark bill. Immatures are similar but with browner tones above.

  • Forages conspicuously, perching high in open areas to scan for insects, which the birds chase down in rapid, agile flight, sometimes over long distances. Vocal and inquisitive.

  • Nests in coastal areas, especially open and semiopen habitats, mangrove forest edges, and towns. Winters in similar habitats as well as openings in rainforest and in open valleys and cities of the northern Andes.
