Gray-headed Chickadee Identification

A medium-sized chickadee with a brown cap, extensive white cheeks, light brown back, black throat bib, and, in winter, rich rusty brown flanks.

A fluffy chickadee, well-suited for northern environments. The black throat bib flares outward at the lower end, with a ragged edge.

Frequently resides in spruce, pine, and larch forests.

Feeds on insects and seeds. Opens seeds by holding under one foot and hammering with its bill.

May visit bird feeders during the winter.
