- ORDER: Passeriformes
- FAMILY: Motacillidae
Basic Description
The rich rusty-red throat and breast of adult Red-throated Pipit brings a splash of color to the typically muted brown palette of pipits. Small, streaky birds of open habitats, Red-throated Pipits nest on tundra across northern Eurasia and extreme western Alaska. They spend the nonbreeding season in wet, grassy areas in Southeast Asia and sub-Saharan Africa, often in flocks. This species forages on the ground, pumping its tail as it pursues insects and spiders. In flight, Red-throated Pipit gives a distinctive, high-pitched peeez call that aids in detecting and differentiating this species from other pipits.
