Cinnamon-rumped and Morelet’s Seedeaters were formerly considered one species, White-collared Seedeater. Breeding male Cinnamon-rumped Seedeater of western Mexico lacks white wingbars and a white crescent under the eye, and has a thin breast band and rich cinnamon underparts.

Cinnamon-rumped Seedeater is one of several species of seedeaters found in Middle and Central America. Female seedeater identification can be challenging, but Cinnamon-rumped Seedeater and other species lack the two white-to-buffy wingbars of female Morelet’s Seedeater.
