Regional Differences

Ornithologists recognize three subspecies, which differ slightly in size and plumage tone: lecontei in the Mojave and Sonoran Deserts, macmillanorum in the San Joaquin Valley of California, and arenicola in the Vizcaíno Desert of Baja California, Mexico.
