New York Annual Loon Census

July 19, 2025 @ 8:00 am 9:00 am

The New York Annual Loon Census is held across the state of New York on the 3rd Saturday of July each year, from 8 to 9 a.m., to provide an annual “snapshot” of the breeding loon population in the state. Results of the census over time provide valuable information regarding the status and trends in New York’s summer loon population.

The Census has been held annually since it was initiated in 2001. People all across New York are invited to participate in the Annual Loon Census and submit their observations from any lake in New York. Participants sign up for a lake in advance, and then record observations of loons on the lake for an hour on the day of the Census.
