Global Birdfair

July 11, 2025 July 13, 2025

Each year, one of the main aims of the world famous Global Birdfair is to support a globally important conservation project by donating funds to BirdLife International. In 2024, Global Birdfair donated $125,000 to BirdLife International to fund the building of the Galala Bird Observatory located at a key migration site overlooking the Red Sea in Egypt. Hundreds of thousands of raptors and other species pass overhead on their journey back and forth between Africa and Europe. Monitoring this annual spectacle is critical for the long-term survival of these migrating bird species. Nature Conservation Egypt “NCE,” the regional Bird Life Partner, will be responsible for the Bird Observatory, working alongside students, volunteers, and the local community.

Global Birdfair is being spearheaded by Tim Appleton (founder of the original Birdfair in 1989) and Penny Robinson. “We are building a program of events to interest all generations,” says Appleton. “There will be a variety of activities including lectures by guest speakers sharing their experiences and discussing topics relating to wildlife around the world.”

Many national and international sponsors and exhibitors will be in attendance. Exhibitors include conservation organizations, tourist boards, and ecotourism companies alongside exhibitors selling books, art, optical equipment, bird food, and local produce.

The location of the event is conveniently placed in the center of England and within easy reach of a wide range of transport options from London and the rest of the UK. Global Birdfair will take place at Lyndon Top. Book in advance to camp on site at Lyndon Top Caravan Park, located on the south shore of Rutland Water near Oakham, Rutland.
