Regional Differences
Ornithologists recognize two subspecies, which differ in the pattern of white in tail and wings: pictus inhabits the U.S. Southwest south to Oaxaca and Veracruz in Mexico, and guatemalae is resident from Chiapas, Mexico south to Nicaragua.
